International Competitiveness and European Best Practice - Why this is important?

The philosophy of competitiveness is the common ground the Centre's member organisations believe in. Faced with the threat of global competition they realise the need to build high performing organisations that will distinguish them against the competition, locally and internationally. Organisations need to define what makes them truly great and how to turn business strategy into a competitive advantage.

A more scientific examination of the traits of such organisations will inevitably lead to the conclusion that, regardless of whether the organisation is private, public, manufacturing or services, large or small, fast or slow moving, high or low tech, any organisation wanting to build towards high performance will need to:

  • Focus on the Customer
  • Employ leaders who engender belief in what the organisation is doing
  • Deliver results that outperform its peers and delights its stakeholders
  • Constantly innovate
  • Have people who feel valued
  • Take a process rather than a function view of their operations
  • Develop partnerships that deliver win-win relationships
  • Take a responsible attitude towards its role in the wider community
  • Have the ability to sense and respond to the external environment and adapt rapidly to the changing circumstances

Northern Ireland, as a small region on the periphery of Europe, like most other small regions in the world, needs to identify where its strengths are - those few areas and niches where worldwide Competitive Advantage can be developed and won. With the downward spiral of core manufacturing sectors, the need to identify and develop new knowledge opportunities such as ICT, Financial and Professional Services, Functional Foods, Creative Industries, Renewables and other high value add industries, whilst at the same time holding fast and developing the remaining manufacturing base becomes of paramount importance for both the private and local government/ public sectors.

The need for innovation, a can-do attitude, a willingness to learn from the best of others from around the world, and a desire to pursuer excellence – this is what is required to create new wealth and a healthy lifestyle for Northern Ireland’s citizens, and this is what the Centre for Competitiveness is about.
