Benchmarking is a powerful business tool because it overcomes a mode of thinking, "The way we do it is the best because this is the way we've always done it." Benchmarking opens organizations to new methods, ideas and tools to improve their effectiveness. It demonstrates other methods of solving problems, and shows that they work, because they are being used by others

You need to know how well your organisation is performing in comparison with others; you also need to know where you could make improvements that would be worthwhile. Benchmarking can therefore yield great benefits. People who undertake benchmarking require a small amount of training and guidance.
