Effective Communication

Effective Communication

A complete training programme to train your people in the art of successful communication.

Introduction

Most of us take the art of Communication for granted. And why shouldn’t we? After all, we take part in dozens of conversations each and every day. It ought to be something we’re relatively good at! The truth is that most of us are not as good at two-way communication as we think we are.

Our success or failure to communicate effectively will shape and perhaps determine whether or not we achieve our personal and professional goals. It affects our self-esteem and our sense of well-being, and the contributions we make to our families, our jobs, and our communities. Good or bad communication can even affect our health.

What is this approach?

Like art, effective communication is based on several fundamental principles – common sense, really. If we understand these basic skills and then practice and refine them so that we are able to put them to use depending on the situations we find ourselves in, we will become quite adept at the art.

These seven fundamental principles, or competencies, are: -

  • Empathizing

  • Receiving the Message

  • Clarifying

  • Understanding

  • “Reading” non-verbal Clues

  • Giving and Receiving Feedback

  • Transmitting Your Message

Each participant completes a self-assessment profile that identifies the areas for improvement and is conducted in advance of the workshop. On the day, time and energy is then focused on these specific areas for improvement, thus ensuring the maximum effectiveness of time spent at the training workshop.
It has been tailored to suit the Northern Ireland context and is the latest addition to the management and leadership training portfolio from the Centre for competitiveness.

What happens on the day?

The completed participant communication effectiveness profiles are returned to the trainer in advance of the training day, so that effective time planning can be executed. The workshop is then tailored around these needs and identified areas for improvement. The workshop is organised like this: -

  • Presentation of the assessment profile structure

  • Overview of the seven competencies

  • Feedback session

  • Personal Action Planning

Who would benefit from this approach?

Absolutely anyone who is involved in dealing with people, whether internally or externally. It is equally appropriate for the private, public and voluntary sectors and for any size of company or organisation.
