Developing Leadership Excellence

Developing Leadership Excellence

“Leadership is a word on everyone’s lips. The young attack it and the old grow wistful for it. Parents have lost it and the police seek it. Experts claim it and artists spurn it, while scholars want it. If bureaucrats pretend they have it, politicians wish they did. Everybody agrees there is less of it than there used to be.”
Warren Bennis.

What is this approach?

There is widespread interest in the subject of leadership, but more importantly, that leadership excellence is, perhaps, the main driver of human progress. Bennis and other experts agree that the quality of an organisation’s leadership will ultimately affect every single individual within it and connected with it. Therefore the pursuit of excellent leadership is a top priority for any organisation.

Leadership excellence is the subject of a great many books and journal articles, but there is not widespread agreement on what an individual needs to do or be in order to succeed in this area. A review of the published work of the world’s best thinkers on the subject of leadership excellence reveals some common themes or competency areas. This workshop has been designed in the USA on these themes and has a proven track record of successful delivery.

It has been tailored to suit the Northern Ireland context and is the latest addition to the management and leadership training portfolio from the Centre for competitiveness.

What happens on the event?

This 2-day, interactive workshop is based upon a sound and proven syllabus focussing on the eight skills and characteristics considered necessary for effective leadership in any setting:

  • Values and Emotional Intelligence

  • Possibilities and Potential - Contextual Thinking

  • Vision - Directional Clarity

  • Creativity, Innovation and Lateral Thinking - Creative Assimilation

  • Ability to Manage Change - Change Orchestration

  • Lead by example and Empower - People Enablement

  • Clear, Reciprocal Communication

  • Character and Personal Strength - Driving Persistence

Each participant will complete a competency-based diagnostic instrument to help them more fully understand their relative skills in these critical areas.

The days are delivered in a participative and interactive manner through activities and exercises, buddy and group work, games and learning by doing and reflection; is interesting and stimulating, with a view to actually helping you to personally develop your own leadership skills and competence to make an impact both in your personal life and in your organisation.

Who would benefit from this approach?

Leaders and would-be leaders at all levels within the organisation. It is equally appropriate for the private, public and voluntary sectors and for any size of company or organisation.
